Pave a True “Information Highway” that Flows in two Directions.
Every voyage requires a feedback loop of two-way communication, listening to what people say (and observing how they say it), and learning all the way. There must be communication to build alignment and execute strategy. Eighty percent of communication is listening—and making it safe for others to tell the truth. Learning is what keeps you on the track and able to outpace the rest.
Keeping on track, over rough and often uncertain terrain, requires agility—that is, learning agility. A key predictor of success, learning agility allows leaders to manage the new and different, by applying lessons learned to unfamiliar and first-time experiences. Leaders who are agile learners absorb information from their experience and use it to navigate unfamiliar terrain.
Inhale Before You Exhale; Think Before You Speak.
Your road is the “high road”—always, with no exceptions. As a leader, there's no room for offhand, ill-considered remarks. You are not speaking for yourself, you are representing others. Therefore, always use “we,” “us,” and “our” versus “I,” “me,” and “my.”
People will also take you literally, so be clear and precise. Just as your words can be inspiring, they can be enormously de-motivating. Become more conscious by zooming out before you speak; always ask yourself if the words will result in the desired outcome as they are cascaded throughout the organization.
